The Name Game

We all probably have some type of title or even many titles - right:  mom, dad, Mr., Mrs., husband, wife, doctor lawyer, nurse, priest nun, minister, rabbi, pope, bishop, president, vice, president, actor, sports player, hero and so on. But none of those are our name nor would we want them to be. We were given a name at birth and that is our name unless we choose to change it. But although we can change our name, we don't have the right to change the name of others.

But that is exactly what man has done to the name of our God. We refer to the creator of the universe as 'God'. But did you ever wonder if that was His name or just one of His many titles? We know that there are many gods so how do we tell them apart.

Apollo: God of music, arts, knowledge, healing, plague, prophecy, poetry, manly beauty, and archery. Ares: God of war, bloodshed, and violence. Hades: God of wealth. Poseidon: God of the sea, rivers, floods, droughts, and earthquakes. Zeus: King of the gods, ruler of Mount Olympus, and god of the sky, weather, thunder, lightning, law, order, and justice. So every time you say 'God', what God are you talking about. Does capitalizing god make it only represent the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? When you say God bless America, are you asking Zeus to bless America?

A line from Aretha Franklin's song maybe says it best:

"R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me"

God says all through the Old Testament, "So they will know that I am YeHoVaH". Even though all the versions you read today say  "So they will know that I am God", that is NOT what God said. The 'original ancient Hebrew scriptures clearly say YeHoVaH (YHVH) over 6,800 times. Man in his defiance changed every YHVH to God. So man lowered His name to the level of all other gods. God Apolo, God Ares, Gad Hades, God Poseidon . . .  then man said that if we capitalize god to God that will make the one true God stand out and distinguish Him from the rest. Do you know

how absurd and disrespectful that is? When He says we will know Him by name he did not mean by title, He meant, and said, NAME.
